The Goods on a Golf Swing Trainer

A golf swing trainer is a device that helps you to consistently swing properly. There are many options available, from those that are designed to fix your slice to those that will help you get a longer, faster drive.

Dont be fooled by the manufacturers that say their trainer will solve any and all golf swing problems. Know your primary swing faults and focus on finding a golf swing trainer designed to fix them. All trainers have the same purpose: to improve your swing mechanics. The majority do this by using what is known as ‘muscle memory.’ The idea is that if you carry out a movement time after time, exactly the same way each time, your muscles become attuned to it. You will be able to execute that movement without having to consciously make your muscles follow the routine.

One type of golf swing trainer you might be familiar with is the large, round devices often made of white piping. These are called golf swing plane trainers. They specifically help you get a feel for the proper swing plane for your body size. These trainers have stood the test of time so youll see them at a lot of driving ranges and courses that offer instruction. Some have exercise cords that strengthen your muscles while keeping your swing in the correct plane, and others keep your arms and legs in the correct posture. Some do both, but remember that you get what you pay for.

Before you invest in a golf swing trainer like this or something simpler, try it out. Most pro shops will allow you hit a few balls in a hitting bay to get a feel for the equipment and its effectiveness. Whether you are considering a big or small investment in equipment, have a golf pro look at your swing and suggest a golf swing trainer. Ask other golfers what they have tried.

One thing to consider when determining whether a trainer is worth the money is its longevity. If you consistently see advertisements for it, its probably an effective training aid and therefore a good buy. But, if you see people trying to unload their used trainer at steep discounts on the Internet or at yard sales, chances are pretty good that it was less than effective.

Once you chosen a golf swing trainer, use it regularly. It will take some time to fix your swing faults, so give it a chance. Too many trainers are collecting dust because their owners got frustrated and gave up on it after just a few sessions.

Why should you work on improving your game? For one, the next time that you head out onto the green with your boss you wont feel like a complete fool when he starts talking about his skills. And, youll be able to brag to your buddies about how you came out under par. It can also help you to enjoy the game more so. Maybe you just need a little more practice (time to get away Saturday morning from the wife kids) or maybe you just need someone to show you a few techniques to help you get the most out of your game. Either way, improving your game can happen in just these steps.

* One of the most prolific mistakes that people make in their game is their stance. Because of how important the way that you st is, youll need to make sure that you have it down perfectly. If this sounds hard, it doesnt have to be.

* After improving your stance, you need to take the time to improve your swing your follow through. When working to improve your game, the follow through of your swing will ultimately provide you with an accurate shot.

* Another mistake the individuals make yet need to realize when working to improve their game is their use of clubs. Which is the right one to use when you tee off? Which should you use to get out of the s dune? While you may think you know the answer, you probably dont.

Okay, so these are the things that you should work on to improve your game, but how do you actually do it? What should you look for? While you can definitely learn from the web, it often makes more sense to see the difference in what you are doing what you should be doing, not just reading it. For that, you should consider one of several options.

* First, you can enroll in a few courses at your local club. This is the best option because it allows hs on, personal training. It is also the most expensive.

* Second, you could also take some courses through your local community center. A good choice it is less expensive.

* You can also work on your game by using videos designed to help you each step of the way. The videos can be purchased throughout the web allow you to actually see the right way to st swing your club.

Improving your game just got a whole lot easier!

Which Clubs Are Most Important?

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

Golf requires many kinds of shots drives, long approach shots, short approach shots, pitches, chips, sand shots, putts and a variety of so-called trouble shots. To play all these shots you can choose, per the rules of golf, up to 14 clubs to have in your bag. Of those 14 clubs which are the most important?

By far the most frequent shot is a putt. For an average golfer, the putter is used more than twice as much as any other club. If a golfer shoots a score of 100, 35%- 40% of those strokes will be putts. So based on shear numbers, the putter is the most important club. It certainly is the one club that can make up for bad shots very quickly.

For better golfers, the driver is used the next most oftena possible 14 times from the tee, or roughly 12-20% of the time depending on ability level. That first shot from the tee sets the tone for the hole, so that makes it a very important club. A good drive makes the rest of the shots on that hole easier. A bad drive means …well trouble. Making sure you have a driver that you have confidence in is critical to good golf.

Having a back-up to your driver is also very important. For those holes where length is not critical, having a club that you know will put you in the fairway is just smart golf. This could be a three wood, a five wood, a hybrid or a 5 iron. It’s more important to know you have a club in your hand that will find the fairway.

For beginners, who have a hard time hitting the green in a regulation number of strokes, the wedges may be the second most used category of clubs. On a good day a beginner may hit 1-4 greens so they spend a lot of strokes around the green (15-20). Practicing with a wedge from 25 yards and in will take strokes off a beginners score very quickly. In fact, at any level having confidence in your wedges makes golf a lot easier.

The remaining strokes in a round are spread among the rest of the set. It is likely that no one club will be used more than a few times. So in terms of frequency of use the putter, driver and wedges are clearly used the most frequently with the rest of the clubs bringing up the rear.

On the other hand, the importance of a club has a lot to do with it’s effect on our games. A club that has the potential to cause problems (strokes) must be given added weight. The more difficult a club is to hit the more likely that it may cause disaster. The driver, the long irons, and fairway woods are the most likely culprits to cause that errant shot that never is heard from again. Good bye ball.

Its no coincidence that these problem clubs are also the longest clubs in the set. We can all agree that the longer the club, the harder to hit. As our abilities improve we can begin to take advantage of what the longer clubs offer (distance) but to help our games now, finding forgiving versions of these clubs is a priority. Thankfully, we have many new possibilities with higher lofted drivers, fairway woods and the new hybrid clubs.

The bottom line is confidence. Build a club set that has clubs that you have trust in. Knowing you have a favorite club, or clubs that you can hit consistently will make the game more fun and give you something to fall back on when your swing goes south. I guess the you could say the most important club is the one you have the most confidence in…no matter what it is.

The Easy Swing

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

The moment I get a golf club in my hand I just want to see how far I can smack that sucker. There is something about golf with me, I can not help myself. Unfortunately hitting the ball as hard as you can does not mean the ball will actually go where you want it to, in a straight line. If all you want to do is let out some pent up frustration, thats fine but if you want to play a good game of golf then you must resist the urge.

You need to be able to swing freely and easily not hard and violently. If you brace yourself you could well use to much effort and if your feet are to close together you will not be able to get any decent power into the shot. If you keep your feet in roughly the same position each time you play a shot and your head still your centre of gravity will be the same.

Move one of your legs suddenly and your head will move causing your position to move, thus changing the pivotal centre in relation to the ball to change. Keep both your feet firmly on the ground so that weight is supported on the flat part of your feet when you strike the ball.

When you do strike the ball correctly everything will feel right, it feels smooth and with not that much effort. Now try and do the same, this is where the problem lies trying to repeat the shot exactly the same. You need to relax, try not to stiffen up or brace yourself ready for the shot. If you stiffen up at all it will destroy your balance.

Concentrate on connecting with the ball to make it go in a straight line, while making sure you hit the ball in the middle of the club. Remember you only want to use the power you are able to control when hitting the ball. You need to get your accuracy right before you increase your power. Your swing should be under control all the time with no sudden movement, keep your head still and strike through the ball.

Your longest drives will probably come when you are just trying for accuracy, not distance. This will come with practice. You should concentrate getting your swing right as often as you can and only when you are satisfied with the accuracy of your stroke should you proceed with increasing your power. Just remember any one can pick up a golf club and hit the ball a long way, its controlling the power in the shot thats the hard part. Good luck and happy golfing.

Understanding The Basic Rules Of Golf

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

There are many people who embark on playing golf but do not really try to understand the rules or the golfing terms used. It’s good to at least understand the basic rules before a game of golf.

Golf is played by striking a ball using a club on an area called teeing ground. Once the ball is hit, it typically travels fairways across and onto a next prepared area. A hole could be found in this area that is called a putting green.

The objective of the game of golf is that one should be able to complete a hole by means of hitting a ball from a teeing ground and place it inside the hole of the putting green in as few strokes as possible. What is usually referred to as a round of golf generally consists of 18 holes to be played in.

In golf, there are mainly two kinds of play to pick from. The winner in one kind of play is determined by the holes that are lost and won, this is referred to as a match play. The other kind of play is determined by the number of strokes one has taken to complete a round. This is called a stroke play.

When playing golf, there are two relevant rules to remember: as you find the course, go play it. As the ball lies, it should also be played as such.

If you find it hard to follow the above rule, at least try your very best to do what is reasonable. How do you know what is fair? Below are the summarized rules to give you a good idea of how to play a good game of golf.

The Intro: Basic golf courtesy

1. Avoid moving, chatting or standing too close to a golfer who is about to make a stroke.

2. Play with a minimum amount of delay. As quickly as the players in the group that you are in have left, it is just as best that you do the same. Try your best not to play until the group is already out of the way.

3. As much as possible, try to replace the divots. Also, remember to smooth any footprints found in the bunkers.

4. It is greatly inadvisable to drop your clubs on the putting green, so don’t!

The Rules of Playing

1. Before playing that all important round of golf, the first thing you should do is to read the local rules stated on the score card you are holding.

2. After which do not forget to place an identifying mark on the ball you are going to use. Some golfers use the same type and brand of golf ball, if in case your ball is placed among these bunch, you will have difficulty finding which is which

3. Make sure that you get to count your clubs before actual play. You should have a maximum of fourteen clubs.

4. When beginning actual play, it is best that you tee off in front of the tee markers. When you tee outside this specified area and you are playing a match play, your opponent may have to ask you to repeat the stroke you just did. The good thing when one does this in a match play, you get to incur no penalty. However, if in a stroke play, you then are given a penalty of two-stroke.

5. If while you are playing and your golf ball happens to lie in a bunker or a water hazard, you should not in any way touch the ground of the bunker or the water before you do your down swing.

6. The ball must as much as possible be struck fairly and should neither be spooned or pushed.

7. It is alright for you to mark the ball that you are using. You could take your ball, clean it and place it on the exact place where it was.

8. When dropping a ball, it is best that you stand upright and then hold the ball at the length of your shoulder, and then you may drop it. If by dropping the ball it happens to strike your partner, you or your caddie, the ball must then be dropped again with no penalty.

9. It is also fine for you to lift your ball if by doing so you are able to assist another player. Or you also may lift any other ball as long as that ball interferes with your playing or interferes another player.

5 Easy Ways To Play Better Golf

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

Every golfer wants to play better golf. Nothing matters most for them than to have a better score when playing golf. This is because most golfers take their gratifications in the scores that they make.

Thus, for people who want to improve their playing ability, here is a list of some tips that they can use to develop their gaming performance.

1. Pump up before the game starts

Every golfer must first learn the stuff they have to do before they play the game. The trouble with most players is that they tend to think that because golf is not a very strenuous sport like basketball, they don’t have to do some warm up exercises.

This should not be the case because golfers ought to warm up and stretch those muscles before they start making double bogeys.

2. Swinging is an ideal exercise

In golf, the most pressured and the most exerted part of the body are the hands. Therefore, it is important to exercise them before playing the game.

Swinging can effectively pull out any stressed or rigid muscle in the hand. Its best to keep on practicing swinging. Experts say that almost 50% of a golfers ability is based on swinging.

3. Consider the size of the golf club

In order to play the best golf game, it is important for a player to select the right golf club that he or she will use. The first to ponder when choosing a golf club is its length. The length should be proportionate and suitable to the player so that he or she will be comfortable when playing.

4. Familiarize the six parts of golf swings

In order to play best in golf, it is important for a player to familiarize himself or herself on the six parts of the golf swing system. The six parts of the swing are the correct alignment of the golf club; proper setup of the golfers posture and position; back swing; take-away; impact; and the follow-through.

5. Know the course

A good golfer should know his or her terrain. Thus, it is important for a golfer to note the so-called trouble areas. This is where some imminent troubles are present like a sloping part of the fairway or hanging branch of a tree.

These are just some of the necessary tips that one could use in playing golf. However, the most important thing a golfer should remember is to keep his or her body healthy before the competition. It’s where they create their power for that handsome back swing.

Golf Clubs: How to Make the Right Choice

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

Digg me

There are a mind-blowing number of choices of equipment used in golf today. This indeed makes it much harder for golfers-especially amateurs-to know which products will best fit their individual games’ needs. The fact of the matter is that playing with golf clubs that do not fit a golfer’s particular needs and experience can produce more harm than good, both in terms of scoring and enjoyment.

According to the golf game’s rules a player cannot carry more than fourteen clubs during a game. Thus, most of today’s players do not carry more than this maximum permitted number. There four basic types of golf clubs: Woods, Irons, Wedges, and Putters.

Woods are usually used to hit long golf shots. Standard woods that are carried in a golf bag are 1, 3, and 5 Woods. A 1 Wood is typically referred to as a driver. As the number of your wood increases (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) you lose the amount of distance it can go, but you gain a higher trajectory. Recent golf club technology has made higher lofted woods for shorter distances. A standard golfer’s bag will have a driver (1 wood) and a couple of fairway woods (3- and/or 5-wood). A driver is the longest club (typically 45 inches) making it the toughest to handle during a swing.

Iron clubs are mostly used for shots that are expected to go an average distance - typically from 125 to 200 yards. The lower the number iron, the less degree on the face of the club, hence, the farther the distance the ball will travel. On the other hand, the higher the number iron, the higher the degree on the face, and consequently, the loftier the shot will be.

An Iron features a thin clubhead with grooves on it. Experienced players opt for a blade style iron, while beginners get a cavity-back style. A blade-style has a clubhead with a full back, but a cavity back’s clubhead is hollow. It is hollowed out to make a perimeter weighting effect helpful for less-experienced golfers.

Irons are categorized as long (1, 2, 3,4), mid- (5,6,7) and short (8,9). Short irons are the easiest to hit while the long ones are the hardest. The shorter the iron, the more loft there is and for beginners, the more loft, the better.

The most popular irons used are 3 Irons and 9 Irons, however, many companies also manufacture 1 Irons as well as 10 Irons.

Wedges are used for semi-short shots. They are also used for chipping, and sand shots. There are several types of Wedges, including sand wedges, pitching wedges, and lob wedges. These are iron clubs and are used for games played on difficult grounds, and approach shots to the green.

A putter is a golf club that has a low loft. This enables the ball to roll farther. A putter is typically shorter than all of your other golf clubs. Putters are the clubs most regularly used in the game and come in clubhead styles of blade, heel-toe and mallet. Lengths come in belly putters, standard and broomstick (long) putters. Which selection to choose will be based on an individual preference.

Another popular type of golf club nowadays is the Hybrid club. The Hybrid club is a cross between the Iron and the Wood, and is made for people who have difficulty using these other types of clubs.

The physical capability of every golfer is different - stance, posture, size, swing characteristics etc yet golf manufacturers make golf clubs identical as an off-the-shelf product. However with a custom fit golf club in your hands you can be safe in the knowledge that your clubs are personalized for you and be sure that when you make a good swing the club will be square at impact and your shot should soar down the middle of the fairway.

The majority of golf clubs which you can purchase today can be customized to accommodate the individual differences between golfers. The lie angle/loft, type of shaft, length of shaft, grip type and grip size can be modified. All that is required to custom fit these clubs is some simple measurements and a basic analysis of your swing.

The following information is usually all that is required: gender, height, distance from the wrist to the floor, age, handicap/skill Level, and swing speed.

Gender is utilised as the golf industry in general utilises different definitions as to what the standard length is for both a male and a female.

Height and distance from wrist to floor is used jointly so that the fitter can determine the length of club which is best suited for you. For example a tall man with long arms could easily be fitted with a shorter shaft than an average height male with short arms. The majority of golfers however use standard length clubs.

The remainder of the measurements are used to determine what type of flex the shaft on your club should have.

The notion that the more costly the club the better it is purely doesn’t hold water anymore. If you do enough research and read reviews you’ll find a club that matches your degree of interest. Some play for a weekend activity and there are others who’d like to move up in the rankings. If the occasional pastime is your stride, a low- to mid-performance club can work for you. But those of you who intend to play more regularly should seriously consider custom, higher-performance clubs.

Oversized Golf Driver Or Not?

March 22nd, 2009 at 06:17pm Under Golf

Do you really need an oversized golf driver? And what material should an oversized golf driver head been made of? When you’re searching for this kind of golf clubs there a few things to think of.

1. Do you need a standard, midsize or oversized golf driver?

2. What head material?

WHAT SIZE?

Choose a standard head size of about 155 cubic centimeters if you are a good golfer who wants to have more control of the driver and who can also hit the ball well with a small sweetspot.

A midsize driver is a size bigger. The head is about 190 to 200 cubic centimeters and therefore, the sweetspot is also slightly larger. Very suitable if you are a mid handicapper and want to lower your handicap.

Oversized golf driver heads are between 200 and 250 cc. Characteristics: larger sweetspot, so fewer mishits, but harder to control as the weight has become heavier. The biggest golf driver heads have a volume of up to 400 cc, sometimes called oversized Jumbo heads.

WHAT HEAD MATERIAL?

The rule of thumb is: the harder the head material, the more your club forgives you. Although this also depends on the ball’s compression or hardness. Aluminium and the different types of titanium alloys are nice to start with. But if you really want to have the top category, then choose golf heads of HST Aluminium, 17-4ph stainless steel or 431 stainless steel. The best are titanium, maraging metal, bi-metal or tungsten.

Titanium is the hardest and lightest head material. Many of the biggest driver heads are made of titanium. Ideal for beginners and high handicappers. But this material is more expensive than steel.

Pay attention: if you see a too cheap set with an oversized golf driver and fairway wood heads of, for example titanium alloy, be careful. The fact is that this head is not made of 100% titanium. It is even possible that there is only a small percentage of titanium in it!

Stainless steel is cheaper en heavier than titanium and titanium alloys. Oversized golf club heads made of stainless steel have smaller sweetspots due to a smaller head. But if you are a mid or low handicap golfer, this is good material for an oversized golf driver.

There are other important checks for selecting standard, midsize or oversized golf drivers. Such as shaft length and flex. You can find them in my Lady Golf Driver Checklist.

Golf Betting Basics

The key to golf betting is differentiating the two main wagering options, so we’re here to serve as your gambling caddy and give you helpful tips on how to understand PGA golf odds. With golf, you can either bet on an individual to win a tournament or take part in Matchup Betting which involves wagering on artificially created golf matchups set by oddsmakers specifically for betting purposes.

Betting to Win an outcome event like The Masters is the most common way to wager on golf. Since golf has multiple tournaments over the course of a year, Betting to Win obviously offers numerous wagering opportunities.

Keep in mind that not all the competitors in a PGA golf tournament may be individually listed to win, so another golf betting option is the field bet which includes all other competitors not listed.

The PGA golf odds on a field bet depend on how many golfers are listed and how likely it is for the top golfers to win. In other words, if the same five or six golfers seem to battle it out for the top spots atop the leaderboard from tournament to tournament, the odds on the field will be much higher since there is less likelihood that one of the longshots in the field will win. However, major upsets seem to occur much more often in golf than other sports, so a field bet is typically comparable to a bet on the favorite odds-wise in order to protect sportsbooks from taking a big hit. In exchange for a lesser payout, field bettors do gain the advantage of having more than one entrant that can win for them.

Here’s an example:

Favorites or top golfers = 5/1 to 10/1
36 or so other well-known golfers listed individually = 10/1 to 200/1
Field (collection of 36 or more not listed) = 10/1

Some sportsbooks will also allow you to bet futures on the four major PGA tournaments, which is yet another way you can Bet to Win that can offer you appealing odds because you are betting far in advance of when the event takes place. For example, betting on the 2006 Masters golf tournament now might get you much better value on Tiger Woods, who may be 10/1 at this moment but dip to 6/1 closer to the event if he is on a roll.

Matchup Betting offers an alternative to simply betting on a golf tournament’s winner. Artificial head-to-head matchups are created by oddsmakers and involve golfers who are all competing against each other to win the tourney, with the bet specifically focused upon how one golfer finishes compared to another golfer in the matchup. Group matchups are another matchup betting option particularly popular in golf and auto racing events like NASCAR, where you can select how one golfer will finish compared to other golfers in the group. Both head-to-head and group matchup golf odds are based on the money line.

If you like a particular golfer going into a tournament, your best move is to compare matchups across multiple online sportsbooks and bet a larger amount on the biggest mismatch in your estimation. Then you can also put down a small wager on your favorite golfer to win the tournament in case he does come through and win the tournament. By betting your golfer to win the tournament and a matchup, you’ll have double the fun knowing you’ve got double the chances to win!

Here are a couple final important tips to consider before picking your golfer:

  • It’s advisable to stay away from betting the public’s favorite golfers since you won’t get much value there
  • Research the golfer’s history, especially how he performs on a particular course since tournaments are typically played on the same course each year and some courses definitely play to a golfer’s strengths better than others

If you are a knowledgeable PGA golf fan who has a good feel about how tournaments will likely turn out, you should most definitely trust your insights and use them to find strong bets. For those of you with less experience, several sports web sites have power rankings for golfers which should give you a good idea of who’s hot on the links and who’s not. Of course it’s up to you to decide which golfer you want to bet on, but the more you learn about PGA golf, the more prepared you will be when placing your bet. Hopefully now at least you know the basics of betting golf and how to use golf odds to your advantage!
